Goodbye Robin van Persie – the player who won United a title

July 5, 2015

If there was ever a man for the moment it was Robin Van Persie. He joined United because he wanted to win a Championship. He wore #20 to signal his intent and then he delivered. United won their 20th championship. Simple as that.

Robin-van-Persie

The Guardian is reporting he’s agreed personal terms with Fenerbahce. I hope those terms are fabulous.  During the negotiations to sign him from Arsenal Arsene Wenger is reported to have said to Alex Ferguson: “He’s better than you think.” Too true Professor. Could any player have had a better first season? No wonder Roberto Mancini was livid when Van Persie chose United over City. The goal against Fulham on his home debut?  Goals in the games that counted; at Liverpool; at Chelsea; at Arsenal; at Tottenham; the hat-trick against Villa. And of course THAT free kick against City.

Here’s van Persie explaining why he joined United and all the goals from that first season

Van Persie cost 24 million pounds. He’s scored 48 times in 86 games. And he “got” Manchester United.  Time, injuries and United’s inevitable transition have caught up with him. But he was a snip.
